If you want to make videos and post them online for the world to see, it can be a little daunting given the quantity of existing content on the site, and the number of YouTube stars already out there, but there is space for everyone to shine. Here are the four key things you will need if you want to hit the ground running and create your own community on YouTube.
1. Find your niche
The first and most important thing to think about for your videos is the content. What do you love so much that you want to share it with the world? What are you so passionate about that it will allow you to connect with viewers all across the globe? It can be absolutely anything, from Minecraft building to comedy sketches, to stamp collecting. Looking at channels such as Stampy, Nerdie Nummies, or StudioC demonstrate the massive variety of content out there. Finding your niche is not about choosing something that is popular, but about what will allow you to create a community of viewers who will enjoy your content.
2. Make a plan
The saying ‘fail to prepare, prepare to fail’ may not be 100% true, but planning what you are going to do and when you’re going to do it can help keep you posting consistently, and help your channel grow faster. 3. Find your tools
You may not have the newest DSLR camera or expensive fancy editing software to start off with, but don’t let this limit you or your ideas. Start with making the content of your video the best it can be, and as you grow your channel, you can upgrade your gear! Plus, there are a lot of free resources out there, some of which have a pretty steep learning curve, so give yourself time to learn, and improve your videos as you make more of them. Starting with a combination of a smartphone camera, royalty free music, and software such as Hitfilm Express can get you a long way.
4. Set your expectations
Only a very small number of creators find success immediately, so get ready to be in it for the long haul! Growth is a slow process, especially when you start out, so try not to let numbers dictate the success of your videos. Long-term commitment is key, so find goals that don’t rely on view or subscriber counts. Focus on making content that you are proud of and that inspires people, from your family and friends to strangers across the world. If you are patient and stick at it, your audience will come to you.
