26th March 2018 – Barclays funds course places for young people at leading EdTech company’s Easter programmes in Salford.

More than 30 children from local schools were awarded the fully-funded scholarship places, usually costing £400, on Fire Tech’s Teen Coding with Python, Digital Photography and Junior Coding courses, held between 9-13th April.

Started in 2013 by Jill Hodges, Fire Tech has since delivered over 7,000 coding, making and digital media courses to young people across the UK, France, Italy, Antigua and Australia.

“We hear that 65% of children in primary school today will work in jobs that do not exist yet. Our mission is to prepare kids for the tech-driven economy in a fun and engaging way,” said Hodges. “In the UK we are facing a digital skills gap that costs the economy £63 billion a year in lost GDP. We are excited that with Barclays support we are able to bring our programmes to the local young people in Salford to inspire and motivate them to further develop their skills and lead the way in digital innovation.”

Both students and parents rave about their courses. “My son has gained proven knowledge and skills from attending Fire Tech. [He] finishes any assignments in half the time, with excellent grades,” said one enthusiastic parent.

Fire Tech tutors, who come from some of the UK’s leading universities, will be teaching students in small classes and will work to enable students to adopt creative, critical and computational thinking through collaborate work on real world challenges.

Jon Hope, Eagle Labs Director says “We’ve worked with Fire Tech since they were residents in our Notting Hill Gate Eagle Lab incubator and have seen first-hand the passion they have for empowering the next generation with the digital skills that they need to succeed in the future. We’re pleased to have been able to work with the local education authority in Salford to provide the children taking part with a good foundation from which they can build their digital knowledge.”
